Root Canal Therapy

Root Canal Treatment (RCT): The most common procedure performed by endodontists is a root canal, which is done to save a tooth with an infected or damaged pulp. The process involves removing the infected pulp, cleaning and disinfecting the root canals, and then sealing the tooth to prevent further infection. Root canal therapy is typically done to avoid tooth extraction.

Retreatment of Failed Root Canals: If a previous root canal fails or the infection returns, an endodontist can perform a root canal retreatment to clean out the old filling material, remove any new infection, and refill the canals.

Endodontic Surgery

Apicoectomy (Root-End Surgery): If a root canal doesn't heal properly or there is a persistent infection at the tip of the root, an endodontist may perform a surgical procedure called an apicoectomy. This involves removing the infected tissue and the tip of the tooth's root, and sealing the root to prevent further infection.

Hemisection: In some cases, if a tooth is severely damaged and cannot be saved in one piece, an endodontist may perform a hemisection, which involves removing one root of a multi-rooted tooth. This may be followed by placing a crown to restore the remaining portion of the tooth.

Treatment of Cracked Teeth

Cracked Tooth Syndrome: Endodontists diagnose and treat cracked teeth, which can cause pain and sensitivity. If the crack extends into the pulp, a root canal may be necessary to save the tooth. Sometimes, endodontists may also repair cracks or place crowns to stabilize the tooth.

Traumatic Dental Injuries

Treatment of Dental Trauma: Endodontists are experts in handling traumatic dental injuries, such as broken or knocked-out teeth. They can treat avulsed teeth (teeth that have been knocked out) by replanting them and performing root canal therapy if necessary. They also handle fractured roots or luxated teeth (teeth that are displaced without being knocked out).

Management of Pain and Infection

Pain Management: Endodontists are highly skilled in managing the pain associated with dental pulp infections and injuries. They are trained to perform procedures with the aim of eliminating pain caused by deep tooth infections or abscesses.

Treating Abscesses: An endodontist can treat dental abscesses (collections of pus caused by bacterial infection) inside the tooth or in the surrounding tissues. Treatment may involve draining the abscess and performing a root canal.

Saving Teeth That Would Otherwise Be Extracted

Endodontists are often sought after to save teeth that may otherwise be extracted due to infection, damage, or injury. They use advanced techniques to clean, disinfect, and restore teeth, allowing patients to keep their natural teeth for longer.

Microscopic and Advanced Techniques

Microscopic Endodontics: Many endodontists use microscopes and other advanced imaging techniques to perform root canal treatments with greater precision, especially in complex cases, such as narrow or curved root canals that are difficult to reach with standard tools.

3D Imaging and CBCT: Endodontists may use cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans to get detailed, 3D images of the teeth, roots, and surrounding structures. This is particularly useful for diagnosing complex cases or root canal issues that aren’t visible on regular X-rays.

Post-Treatment Care and Follow-up

After a root canal or endodontic surgery, endodontists may provide follow-up care to monitor healing, ensure there are no complications, and recommend further restoration, like crowns or other dental work, to protect the tooth long-term.

Treatment of Referred Cases

Endodontists typically treat patients who are referred by general dentists for more complex procedures like root canals or surgeries. They provide specialized care for conditions that require more in-depth knowledge of the tooth’s internal structure.

Pulp Vitality Tests

Endodontists can perform pulp vitality tests to assess the health of the pulp and determine whether a tooth’s nerve is alive or if a root canal is needed.
