1

Design and Fabrication of Full Dentures

Full Dentures (Complete Dentures): These are designed for patients who have lost all their teeth in either the upper or lower jaw (or both). Full dentures are custom-made to fit the contours of the patient’s gums and jaw, restoring both function and appearance.

Immediate Dentures: These are made in advance and can be placed immediately after the natural teeth are removed. They serve as a temporary solution while the gums heal, though they may need adjustments as the mouth changes during the healing process.

1

Design and Fabrication of Partial Dentures

Partial Dentures: These are used for patients who have lost some but not all of their teeth. Partial dentures use the remaining natural teeth for support and are often removable. They help restore chewing function and prevent the remaining teeth from shifting.

Fixed Partial Dentures (Bridges): In some cases, a denture specialist might create a fixed bridge, which is anchored to the existing teeth or dental implants and provides a more permanent solution than removable partial dentures.

1

Implant-Supported Dentures

Implant-Supported Overdentures: These dentures are supported by dental implants rather than just the gums. Dental implants are small titanium posts inserted into the jawbone, and dentures are attached to these posts for a more secure fit. Implant-supported dentures help prevent bone loss and offer better stability compared to traditional dentures.

Hybrid Dentures: A denture specialist may work with a periodontist or oral surgeon to design and place hybrid dentures (a combination of a fixed bridge and removable denture), which are often supported by dental implants.

1

Denture Fitting and Adjustment

Initial Fitting: After the dentures are made, the denture specialist ensures they fit properly in the patient’s mouth. This includes adjusting the size, shape, and fit for comfort, and ensuring that the bite is correct.

Adjustments and Refining: As the gums and bone settle over time, dentures may need adjustments for better fit and comfort. The denture specialist will fine-tune the dentures to avoid irritation, sores, or discomfort.

1

Denture Repair

If a denture breaks, cracks, or needs relining due to wear, the denture specialist can repair or modify the denture. This may include adding material to the denture base or adjusting the teeth for better function.

1

Relining and Rebasing

Relining: Over time, the gums and jawbone may shrink, leading to poor fit and discomfort with dentures. The denture specialist can reline the inside of the denture with a new layer of material to improve fit and comfort.

Rebasing: In cases where the denture base has become severely worn, a denture specialist may perform rebasing, which involves creating a new base while keeping the existing teeth intact.

1

Denture Care and Maintenance

A denture specialist educates patients on how to properly care for their dentures to ensure longevity and prevent damage. This includes cleaning instructions, handling advice, and guidance on when to replace dentures due to wear or changes in the mouth.

1

Cosmetic Considerations

Denture specialists pay close attention to the aesthetic aspects of dentures. They work to ensure that the dentures match the natural color and shape of the patient’s remaining teeth (if any), creating a natural-looking smile. They consider factors such as tooth color, shape, gum contours, and bite alignment to make the dentures look as realistic as possible.

1

Managing Complex Cases

For patients with significant bone loss, severe jawbone deterioration, or other complications, a denture specialist may collaborate with other dental professionals, such as oral surgeons, periodontists, or implant specialists, to create more advanced treatment plans, such as implant-supported dentures or custom solutions to restore both function and appearance.

Consultations and Treatment Planning

Denture specialists provide thorough consultations to assess a patient's oral health, discuss treatment options, and develop a customized plan based on the patient’s needs. They consider factors such as oral health, bone density, and budget when planning the type of denture treatment that is best suited for the patient.

A prosthodontist is a highly trained dentist who specializes in the creation, fitting, and maintenance of dentures. Their primary goal is to restore the ability to chew, speak, and smile confidently for patients who have lost their natural teeth. They offer a wide range of services, including designing full and partial dentures, implant-supported dentures, performing adjustments and repairs, and ensuring the long-term comfort and aesthetic appeal of dentures.
